Nestled in Ontario, Canada, the world's tiniest jail resides in Tweed—a charming town within the central-eastern county of Hastings. This diminutive correctional facility, measuring slightly over 24 square meters, boasts dimensions of 4.8 meters in width and 6 meters in depth.
Surprisingly, this jail's compact size even outshines Toronto's coziest bachelor pads, spanning just over 300 square feet. While no longer accommodating inmates, the jailhouse remains a fascinating attraction where visitors can capture snapshots from within its confines.
Originating in 1898 and inaugurated in 1900, this historical structure initially featured three cells and a lobby, erected to replace its flood-stricken predecessor. Typically housing minor offenders, the jail's annals include intriguing stories, such as that of Gideon Butts, who briefly stayed after a disturbing crime. Operating for five decades, it eventually ceased operation due to the town's lack of criminal activity, transitioning into an OPP office and presently serving as a seasonal visitor information center.
