Researchers at the INRS Énergie Matériaux Télécommunications Research Centre in Canada have developed the world's fastest camera, achieving an unprecedented speed of 156.3 trillion frames per second (fps).
In comparison to conventional slow-motion phone cameras, which typically operate at a few hundred fps, this groundbreaking technology can capture events taking place in femtoseconds, a unit of time equivalent to quadrillionths of a second.
Making use of advanced techniques like compressed ultrafast photography (CUP), the system, known as "swept-coded aperture real-time femtophotography" (SCARF), holds the potential for significant advancements in fields such as physics, biology, and materials science.
