Australia's opening batsman, Usman Khawaja, has extended his impressive recent form by securing the ICC Men's Test Cricketer of the Year for 2023.
Khawaja faced tough competition from teammates Travis Head, India's spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, and England's Joe Root for the prestigious award. His outstanding year contributed significantly to Australia's successful campaign, culminating in their first ICC World Test Championship title.
Khawaja commenced 2023 in exceptional form, building on his momentum from the previous year with a career-best score of 195* against South Africa. His standout performance came in the crucial away series against India, where he emerged as the leading run-scorer for both teams with 333 runs in four matches, including a century and two fifties.
Despite facing rare failures in the World Test Championship Final, Khawaja bounced back during the Ashes against England, finishing once again as the highest run-scorer in the series with 496 runs. The left-handed batsman concluded the year impressively with three scores of 40+ against Pakistan.
