During the ongoing ICC World Cup 2023, Sri Lankan all-rounder Angelo Mathews made an unusual entry into the record books, becoming the first player to be timed out in international cricket during the team's match against Bangladesh in Delhi.
As per the rules, a new batsman must be prepared to face a delivery within two minutes of the fall of a wicket. In Mathews' case, he faced a delay when the strap of his helmet broke as he was getting ready to take strike. While he awaited a replacement helmet, Bangladesh's Shakib appealed, leading the umpires to declare Mathews timed out.
Prior to the match, concerns were raised about the air quality in New Delhi, with the city being ranked as the most polluted major city globally. Despite the challenging conditions, the cricket match between Bangladesh and Sri Lanka was given the go-ahead at the Arun Jaitley Stadium.
The air quality in the Indian capital has fluctuated between "poor" and "severe" levels, prompting some players and coaches from both teams to train while wearing face masks. Pre-match practice sessions were canceled, and certain Bangladesh players with asthma were confined to their hotel as a precautionary measure.
