What is COPD? Can someone explain it in simple terms?

I’ve been seeing the term COPD in health articles and medical discussions, but I’m not fully sure what it actually means. Is it a disease, and how serious is it?

Does COPD affect the lungs permanently, or can it be treated and managed over time? I also want to understand what causes it — is it related to smoking, pollution, or something else?

If someone can explain what COPD is, its symptoms, and how people usually deal with it in daily life, it would really help me understand it better.

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, or COPD, includes chronic bronchitis and emphysema, and is caused by exposure to irritants such as cigarette smoke that damage your lungs and airways over time.

COPD is the third leading cause of death by disease in the United States. More than 16.4 million people have been diagnosed with COPD, but millions more may have the disease without even knowing it. COPD causes serious long-term disability and early death.

There are two main forms of COPD: Chronic bronchitis, which involves a long-term cough with mucus. Emphysema, which involves damage to the lungs over time.

The most common signs and symptoms of an oncoming exacerbation are: More coughing, wheezing, or shortness of breath than usual. Changes in the color, thickness, or amount of mucus. Feeling tired for more than one day.

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease makes it increasingly difficult for a person to breathe. It is not currently possible to cure or reverse the condition completely, but a person can reduce its impact by making some treatment and lifestyle changes.
