On Tuesday, Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari announced that co-Chairman Asif Ali Zardari will be the party’s candidate for the presidential position, emphasizing their right to constitutional positions. Following a two-day Central Executive Committee meeting, Bilawal expressed his desire to see his father, Asif Ali Zardari, become the president, citing his ability to address the current crisis in the country.
Bilawal also announced that PPP would not become part of any coalition government, opting to vote for the prime minister candidate of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) but remain in opposition. He acknowledged the PPP's lack of mandate to form a government at the center and emphasized the decision to support PML-N’s candidate for premiership to prevent political instability.
The day before, senior PPP leadership had advised Bilawal Bhutto and Asif Ali Zardari against forming a coalition government with PML-N, suggesting that the PPP should sit in opposition.
The Central Executive Committee members proposed respecting the mandate of independent candidates and viewed forming a coalition government as a potential political loss. Some even suggested exploring talks with Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) instead of PML-N.
