During the Eid holidays in Punjab and Lahore, an emergency situation was declared in both public and private hospitals as approximately 18,000 patients were admitted with gastrointestinal ailments. The influx of patients during this time was primarily due to overeating and disregarding precautionary measures while consuming the meat of sacrificed animals and other foods during the religious festival of Eid-ul-Azha.
The main hospitals in Lahore, including Mayo Hospital, Services Hospital, Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, Jinnah Hospital, Lahore General Hospital, Kot Khawaja Saeed Hospital, and Government Shahdara Hospital, witnessed a significant rush of patients over the three-day period. Hospital administrations had been alerted by the Punjab Health Department beforehand and additional arrangements were made to accommodate the increased number of patients.
According to estimates, a total of 18,000 patients sought emergency treatment for gastrointestinal issues during the three days of Eid across public hospitals in Punjab. The emergency wards were filled with patients experiencing stomach pain and other related ailments. In Lahore alone, 2,000 patients were admitted to the emergency wards of the six major hospitals during the first two days of Eid. Hospitals such as Mayo Hospital and Service Hospital received a large number of patients, including children.
The Punjab Health Department emphasized the importance of consuming lemon and yogurt along with meat and advised individuals with pre-existing health conditions to avoid overeating. Additionally, citizens also flocked to pharmacies and medical stores in the city to purchase medicine for the symptoms caused by overeating.
