Former Prime Minister and leader of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), Nawaz Sharif, has confirmed his return to Pakistan on October 21, as confirmed by his brother and the president of the PML-N, Shehbaz Sharif. This announcement was also corroborated by former information minister and PML-N spokesperson Marriyum Aurangzeb on a social media platform.
Nawaz Sharif was initially expected to return in September to lead the PML-N's election campaign. However, during a meeting between Nawaz and Shehbaz, it was decided to delay his return to a later date.
Shehbaz Sharif, speaking alongside Nawaz in London, stated that the decision regarding Nawaz Sharif's return was made after consulting with the party. Shehbaz mentioned that Nawaz Sharif would arrive in Lahore, where he would receive a warm welcome.
Shehbaz expressed that the entire nation is eagerly anticipating Nawaz Sharif's return, believing that under his leadership, Pakistan's economy and progress would resume from where it left off in 2017 when Nawaz Sharif was disqualified and removed from power.
In July, Shehbaz had already announced that if the PML-N were to come to power in the upcoming elections, Nawaz Sharif would be the party's candidate for the position of prime minister.
Since 2019, Nawaz Sharif has been in exile primarily residing in London, following his lifetime disqualification in the Panama Papers case. The likelihood of his return increased after the Senate passed amendments to the Election Act, which altered the duration of disqualification for parliamentarians. According to the new rules passed on June 17, if the duration of disqualification is not specifically outlined, it will not exceed five years for a person's eligibility to run for provincial or central legislatures
