Pakistan captain and Colombo Strikers player, Babar Azam, has maintained his stance against promoting betting by including a "no betting ad" clause in his contract for the Lanka Premier League 2023. During the first game of the tournament against Jaffna Kings, Azam was seen without any betting labels on his jersey and helmet, reaffirming his beliefs.
Babar Azam has previously made it clear that he will not endorse betting due to its anti-Islamic nature. He informed the Lanka franchise that he will not be involved in any promotional activities related to betting brands and companies.
While betting is illegal in Pakistan, the Pakistan Super League (PSL) and the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) have had a betting website as their partner. However, the brand was promoted as a form of surrogate advertising to avoid controversy.
In the opening game of the Lanka Premier League, Babar Azam's team, Colombo Strikers, faced Jaffna Kings. Although Azam had a challenging outing, scoring only 7 runs, his commitment to his "no betting" campaign remained evident.
The Colombo Strikers squad for LPL 2023 includes several notable players such as Naseem Shah, Wahab Riaz, Niroshan Dickwella, and Mohammad Nawaz, among others
